2 months agoWednesday evening we had an emergency. Went to emergency. I went in expecting someone would get a wheelchair and come out and help me get her inside. NO. I got flack for being parked in emergency (not the ambulance lane). I got her in to the check in desk and went to park. She was put in an ER room. I went to be with her there. The only chair provided in the room was a metal frame with little to no padding. Chair was my problem because I have arthritis and it hurt to sit in the chair. I left at around 4 a.m. staff that attended my daughter were very nice. Until time to check out. My daughter calls me Friday morning about 9:20 a.m. and says they're releasing her. It's an hour drive for me to get there. I pick her up. We drive the hour to her house. Then she gets a call that she has to come back, right then. THEY FORGOT TO PUT THE MONITOR ON HER. WE, she's unable to drive there, have to turn around and go back and it hast to be today (Friday afternoon) an hour each way, WHY . WERE THEY IN SUCH A HURRY to RELEASE HER WITHOUT THE VEST?.?? My daughter is sick. Who was responsible for getting the monitor (vest) on her? They were in too big of a hurry and didn't pay attention. What else might they might not be paying attention to??? Thursday at shift change, young man comes in and is concerned because she has not pooped that day. She told earlier staff that she had diarrhea. No one documented it till p.m. staff came in. This is funny/pathetic. They brought her some diapers that were big enough for several people to fit into at the same time. She put one on had to hold it on. I hate complaining because some of the staff were great but then there were those that need to pay attention or find another job.

5 months agoMD Anderson is the most organized medical operation I have ever visited. I drove 2000 miles to get here and every appointment was scheduled for back to back meeting, treatments, scans, labs, etc. All the staff were polite, exceptionally helpful, professional and well trained. The doctors were among the best in the world, yet still took the time I needed to get my questions answered. They also have what seems to be the best and latest equipment (MRI, Proton bean, IMRT radiation treatment, blood labs, etc) From intake to diagnosis, and hopefully to treatment and cure, I am overjoyed to have chosen to be here. There is a reason Anderson is ranked #1 in the world for treating cancer. (also, I lived in Panama for many years and a friend from there called to tell me that the President of Panama is here now receiving treatment)

2 months agoI was a patient at MD Anderson for years (shout out to Dr. Mimi Hu and her fabulous staff). I'm currently residing in Portugal and being treated for a duodenal GIST at a different cancer center in my new country and I long for the kindness and compassion I used to experience at MDA. The people at MD Anderson make you feel like a partner in your care and like a human with value. I miss that so much.

4 months agoThe so-called MD Anderson hospital, widely regarded as the pinnacle of cancer care in the United States, should prioritize fostering effective communication, respectful interactions, and empathetic patient care. It is important surgeons engage in collaborative decision-making processes that actively involve the families of patients. Family members are the individuals who are best suited to make decisions regarding the care of their loved ones, rather than solely relying on the opinions of surgeons. We were optimistic that MD Anderson would be an advantage and instrumental in extending my brother's life. My brother presented with a substantial brain tumor. The medical team determined that surgical intervention was the course of action and proceeded. When questioned about alternative options, the surgeons maintained that this was the only way. NO YOU DON'T JUST SAY THAT AND WALK AWAY!! Listen up!. It's important to have some basic communication skills and empathy. My mother wasn't shown any respect or given any info about the treatments they've been coming up with for my brother. They haven't been keeping her in the loop about what's going on with his health, and that's just not remotely right in any way. SURGEONS ALSO TRIED SWEEPING UNDER THE RUG THE FACT MY BROTHER HAD A STROKE DURING SURGERY!!! After 15 days in the ICU my mother was informed by a patient advocate that he had a stroke while in surgery and that is why he is now in a vegetable state. He is unable to communicate verbally, he is immobile, and he lacks cognitive recognition of his own mother! When any treatment for a patient is needed FAMILY are the ONLY persons that should make the decisions! Physicians should only provide recommendations. In the event that the family expresses a preference for chemotherapy or radiation therapy as an alternative to surgical intervention, it is important that physicians allow family to make a comprehensive discussions to a ascert the rationale and concerns behind their decisions. That is a decision that is theirs to make. When a patient experiences insufficient oxygen supply to the brain, - AFTER JUST HAVING BRAIN SURGERY - It is common sense that the patient be given supplemental oxygen via nasal cannula or mask to elevate their blood oxygen levels. I'm so embarrassed that the doctors treated my mom with no respect. It has come to my attention that the standard of care provided by the ICU nurses responsible for my brother's well-being has been lacking, resulting in inadequate attention to his needs.
