I never leave reviews, and to be honest most people leave reviews when they are not satisfied. That being said, I had one of the most terrifying experiences of my life with my 8 year old son. I had to carry him into the E.D. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left 6 days later, every person that we interacted with gave us such wonderful care. At check in, they got him in promptly, even with a very busy waiting room. From the doctors, nurses, emt, nutritionist, and the amazing educator who taught me how to care for my son for 3 days with a new diagnosis so I could take him home with confidence , I thank each and every one of you. The weekend nurses on the peds unit, thank you, all of the nurses actually. The nurse who shared her story to better reassure my son because she was in his shoes as a small child, thank you all. I am sad the cafe is closing, the staff there is so kind and the coffee was so appreciated. Our whole world changed that day. We are doing well and maintaining his diagnosis at home. Not only did you all take great care of my last born child, but you checked on me during a hard time, when you didn’t have to. I’ve always hated hospitals and doctors, not one doctor we had treated us like a patient number. Words of encouragement and reassurance were given instead.

I took my daughter to UPMC Harrisburg yesterday 09/29/24. We signed into the ER due to my daughter having trouble breathing and wheezing. We luckily didn’t wait too long before we were sent back to a room. That’s where the review starts to go downhill, for now. We got sent back to a “triage fast track” room that consisted of just a chair and was for patients that were meant to be seen briefly and discharged. We got there at 10am and waited in that room until about 6:30pm. While we were in that room my daughter received some breathing treatments, an oral steroid and a chest x-ray for the conditions she was having. The room was fairly dirty, which if it’s meant to be an “in and out” type of room, I can see how at least the floor would be a little dirty. But to try and keep a 15 month old within what had to be a 10x8 room for over 8 hours was extremely tough. I will say the doctor we interacted with was nice and seemed to care for our daughter. 2 hours after the second breathing treatment, a pediatric doctor came down to evaluate my daughter because she was still having trouble breathing. She said they were admitting her for overnight observation and we would have a room up on the pediatric floor in less than an hour. An hour had went by and my wife had asked one of the nurses if a room was ready upstairs, to which she said we were assigned a room and was going to call and see when we were going up. Another half an hour had passed of not hearing anything and at this point I was getting pretty irritated. I went out and spoke to another nurse, who I respectfully said either we get sent up to our room with our daughter or to discharge us so we can find a hospital that will care for our daughter. To which the nurse related that people spend days in the ER, and I said while that’s fine, a 15 month old should not, especially a room not designed to be a long term ER room. She made a phone call to the pediatric floor and within 5 minutes we were being sent up to the room. That same nurse came to get us and was shocked the room we had just spent over 8 hours in due to it again not being a room designed to be a long term ER room. Once we got up to the pediatric floor, the staff and care for our daughter overnight was great. No person should receive any less care, and while I get “shit happens”, it shouldn’t happen for a 15 month old.

I’m never one to leave a bad review but from what my family and I just experienced, I feel compelled. My brother was in here for severe head trauma over the last two weeks. We had an absolute horrible time at UPMC Harrisburg. The doctors and nurses had no proper way to communicate with each other and they changed daily so there is no consistency in treatment or care. Some of the nurses were good and cared, but some could barely speak english. Every day we were told different and contradictory things from various staff. Multiple times my brother was given medications that were allegedly dangerous for his condition according to the random doctor that came in the following day. We found him dirty, starving, and dehydrated on more than one occasion. He has been at another hospital for only two days and is already a completely different person and making a rapid recovery. If you care about your family member, do not let them come here!!! I hate to think about what has transpired at this place for other families. This hospital deserves much more than a bad review from me.

I had a thyroidectomy here on Wednesday. There were a few emergencies that had my surgery pushed back several hours…HOWEVER, the staff was amazing. Every person was kind, open, and friendly. When my anxiety got to high they even had aroma therapy while I was in pre-op waiting. My Dr. stopped by between emergencies to ensure I was okay and let me know I wasn’t forgotten and every step of my experience was positive. I will admit that this hospital is old and shows its age. The waiting room was full and looked like it was going to suck on all levels, but reality was that the staff and care was 100% top notch. Once I was recovering and put in a room, my room was spotlessly clean, the nurses and aids were super helpful and friendly, and I can not compliment my experience enough. Thank you to everyone who cared for me so well!

This hospital is disgusting. My sister gave birth in the morning and I went with my parents to see her newborn, in the evening. Despite being with my family they would not allow me to enter. I did not know I needed to have a drivers license or another form of ID on me, just to visit a patient. I was under the false impression you could sign in. I was told by security that if the nurses in the room approved the visit, I could go up. I was then told the two nurses said there was a new policy in place and wouldn't let me up to see my own sister. In the end I never even got to see my nephew on my sister's special day and the hospital and staff could care less. I understand the need for security, but denying a family member visitation rights when there are multiple other family members with me, to confirm and vouch for my identity, is ludicrous. Absolutely disgusted with UPMC Harrisburg and it's idiotic policies. Don't make the same mistake. Go elsewhere or know you MUST have an ID on you.
