The department of Ophthalmology of the Howard University College of Medicine was established by the Board of Trustees of Howard University on January 22, 2000. Prior to that date, the Ophthalmology Service, located in the Ambulatory Care Center (Towers Building) at Howard University Hospital, was a division under the Department of Surgery. Our services include:
The HUH Department of Ophthalmology is a referral center for the surrounding metropolitan area. The Eye Clinic is equipped to provide a full range of diagnostic services, including ultrasonography, biometry, fundus and slit lamp photography, visual function studies, (ERG, EOG, etc.) and automated perimetry. General ophthalmic and subspecialty clinics in glaucoma, low-vision, oculoplastics, pediatrics, cornea-external disease and retinal diseases are held on a weekly basis. A modern minor surgery area, including three ophthalmic lasers, allows us to provide convenient outpatient services. A well-equipped, dedicated eye operating room provides an advantageous setting for a wide range of outpatient ophthalmic procedures. An optical shop was established to give the ophthalmology residents experience in the art of dispensing and making glasses, low vision aids, and contact lens.

a month agoI've been a patient at Howard for more than five years because I have an issue that requires a specialist, but I still cannot get a call back or access to the patient portal to book appointments despite calling, leaving messages, emailing, and talking to staff repeatedly. When you do finally manage to book an appointment, they overbook and it usually takes 2 hours to be seen and then they don't update your insurance information so you are incorrectly billed.

7 years agoIt is my pleasure to express my observation on the customer service and the treatment I obtained at your Ophthalmology Department since Aug-15-2017- Oct โ 4-2017. During those days, the treatment obtained from your departmentโparticularly the eye surgery, was successful and ended without complications. In the meantime, I would like to thank the outstanding services given to me by the technicians, nurses, and receptionist. Everything was great and wonderful! Sincerely, Hail Mariam Mintwab

6 years agoI was very disappointed about the 2 hours I had to wait (after my scheduled appointment time) before I was seen by a doctor, but the saving grace was Dr. Asima Bajwa. Dr. Bajwa apologized for the long wait, which I greatly appreciated, and proceeded to give me a thorough eye exam and answered my numerous questions with patience, expertise, and humor. Dr. Bajwa was wonderful and I wish her continued success in the future! Suggestion for HUH Ophthalmology: Please notify patients (when they arrive) if they are going to have to wait 2-3 hours or longer to see a doctor so the patient can decide to stay and wait or reschedule for another day. Thank You.

5 years agoI have had a great experience with Dr. Bilal Khan. I was in need of a retinal specialist a few years back when I first met Dr. Khan. I found him to be very knowledgeable, kind, caring, and compassionate. Back at that time, he was heaven sent to me! I always say that "He Is One Of The Best In The City." I continue to see him today. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

6 years agoI visited Howardโs Opthalmology office because of a chemical exposure to my eye. I was a walk-in patient, and spent about 3 hours of my time there. I thought that the Physician, Dr. Richard, was competent and very knowledgeable. Overall, I am happy with my visit and would recommend.
