For over 20 years, Chef Ali Elsayed has made it his mission to redefine Egyptian cuisine. As the first North African business owner on what is now recognized as “Little Egypt”, Ali has created a welcoming environment for all to enjoy the dishes passed down to him from his family. His goal has always been to teach others through taste, combining history lessons, spices, and charisma for all to leave a little wiser. From the homemade koshery to the soft-as-butter lamb shanks, all of Ali’s masterpieces harken back his mother who fed him and all the children of their Alexandria neighborhood. Her cooking influence and his artistic vision are seen on the walls and decor, all syncing perfectly with each dish. Kabab Cafe has never just been a restaurant but rather a home to all looking for a warm meal and a lesson.

a year agoI was excited for my meal after reading excellent reviews here. The no menu schtick is a trap for the chef to provide inconsiderate service and arbitrary pricing. When I walked in I bought into the romanticization of the chef owner concept. Don’t make that mistake. By the time I left, 2 hours later for 2 small dishes, I’d been served over-cooked, over-seasoned, lazily prepared food in an uncomfortable setting. I was charged an exorbitant price for the displeasure. Worst meal I’ve had in NYC. Due to the chef’s aggressive and rude manners I couldn’t have a conversation with my guest without the chef intruding. I am alarmed by the lack of basic food handling safety. The chef and owner Ali was coughing and sneezing onto the dishes as he prepared them. Bleach and other cleaning products are stored haphazardly adjacent to food prep areas. See attached photo for the conditions of the cooking space and equipment. Due for an inspection ASAP. Do yourself a favor and go to any number of excellent options in the neighborhood instead.

2 years agoThis restaurant brings back the importance of having a chef interact with his customers, someone who really cares about who he’s about to serve. For the quality of food you get, the prices are worth it and the flavors are immaculate. My jaw literally dropped after the first taste of each plate he handed me and you can feel the essence of genuine love in every dish he curates for you. Go in and ask him to make you whatever he suggests, and you’ll understand what food is supposed to taste like.

a year agoI find it funny how people come in here expecting something different that what Ali doesn’t pretend to offer. If you walk in here and see what you see, why do you think it will magically be what you want it to be. This one was of the most magical evenings from the warm hearted Ali. A dinner we will never forget and those who come on here giving 0 stars and complain how Ali does his cooking shouldn’t have come in at all. If you know you know … thanks Ali for a lovely evening 🏼🤌🏼✨

5 years agoThis place is a gem. It’s a very small place with enough seating for 10-15 people. The proprietor is an excellent gentleman who cooks everything from scratch and serves it. He is also very warm and friendly. The food is delicious, full of flavors, made from ingredients that are very fresh. Overall the experience is very personal; very different from an usual “restaurant”. The cuisine is specifically Alexandrian, and the name “kebab cafe” doesn’t do justice - this place has so much more than just kebabs.
