I was pleasantly surprised waiting for my hotel room across from the Port Authority bus terminal on West 40th to stumble upon this delightful store. I was amazed by the imported spices in open barrels, including lava-red Hungarian paprika and wildly-hued Indian spices. The Greek baklava, spanikopita, halvah, yogurt, assorted olives and feta cheese looked wonderful.
They also sold honey, pastas, pitas and a limited array of cooking utensils and metal pans. Products strung from aged wooden rafters overhead brought to mind Mediterranean bazaars. I found out my friend Barb has bought feta cheese here for years - she said it is the best in NYC!
It is still fun to come out and walk the 15 blocks, but some of the food is not as good as it should be. if this is supposed to be a place where you get original food no one should be taking anything out the freezer and frying it. there are some vendorsthat had original funnel cakes made, and others took them out the deep freezer .There were a lot of dogs and it was a lot of fun. You can get any nationality of food here today.
This isn't a huge shop, but it's filled with so many hard-to-find products from all over the world. There are many spices sold in bulk, as well as packaged items. There are also deli products that you can order by weight. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Visiting here is a treat for the senses, with beautiful bright spices scenting the air. It's a unique little place and always interesting to pop in to.
Iโve been going here for 40 years. Always a joy to shop with surprises! High quality with many Organic products. Great way to purchase only what you need or in bulk. The BEST taramasalata ever!
Too many things. Fortunately the staff knew what they had. I just asked.
11/20/2023 returned to stock up on black beans and steel cut oats. Also got red lentils, taramasalata, pita bread, baklava.
Found best way there from Times Square station. Exit at 40th, pass south of Port Authority and you are there.
Took a photo of the front door which says they close at 5:45. Google maps says 6:30. Tried to change it. They open at 7:30. Saturday close at 5:30. Sunday closed.
