St. Mary Orthodox Church is a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of north America. In February, 1972, St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church was born when a young priest named Fr. George Shalhoub was ordained and assigned to a small parish in Livonia, Michigan with no church building to call their own. Five years later, in 1977, the Community was blessed to have Metropolitan PHILIP preside over the dedication of their brand new church building located on Merriman road and finally had a place to call home. Then in 1991, the completion of the cultural center, next door to the church, opened and has been a consistent meeting place for the people of this parish.
To offer the entire Basilica of St. Mary community (Infant thru Seniors) a place in which they can come together with other Orthodox Christians to receive moral, ethical, and spiritual guidance based on our Orthodox Christian faith, providing a foundation for leading a Christ-centered life, and giving opportunities to spread Love, Joy, and Hope to our neighbors through works of mercy and outreach.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you. By this all will know that you are My disciples. (John 13:34-35)
The goal for every ministry program at the Basilica of St. Mary is no different than the goal for leading a strong Orthodox Christian way of life. This goal is realized through providing opportunities for each person to be fully integrated into the total life of the Church by helping them to commit to living their faith through worship, witness, service and fellowship.
The success of this goal is based upon building a foundation of strong relationships with each other that are rooted in love, honesty, trust, openness, respect and forgiveness. These six pillars of our Christian faith, when integrated together, work to build up a strong Christian way of life.
With this goal in mind, the Basilica of St. Mary has in place many ministry programs for all members of the community to participate in, allowing them to not only internalize the six pillars, but to begin to put them into practice.

4 years agoI attended a service at this church and what a beautiful service and church. You need to spend time to sit and meditate on these icons which tell the full story of Christianity. The architect designer did a great job, photos will not shows the panoramic view, nothing like watching by your eyes.

8 months agoBeautiful parish with wonderful homilies that help me apply the Gospel to my everyday life. I appreciate Father's homily on the tax collector recently. The beauty of the Orthodox Church is that all five senses are a part of worship and building your relationship with God. St. Mary is an Antiochian Orthodox parish. Antiochian parishes are in communion with Greek Orthodox and others. Most of the service is done in English however, there are some parts of the services that will be done in Arabic. These parts are also done in English. On a practical note, access to St. Mary is easy from I-96. There is sufficient parking and thankfully an adequate percentage set aside for handicapped access.
