ABOUT US
While we might originally come from India or Pakistan or Uganda or Sri Lanka, every single Bohra in the United States regards him or herself as American first and foremost. We are proud of the contribution we make to American society. And we are loyal and law-abiding citizens of this wonderful country.
The Dawoodi Bohra communities of America make a significant contribution to all of the cities in which we live. In return, the United States has welcomed us with open arms and regards us as neighbors and friends.
BOHRA FAITH
With one million followers, the Dawoodi Bohras are a branch of Islam that has been in existence for many centuries.
Bohras adhere to the teachings of the Prophet MohammedSAW and follow the Shi’a Fatemi school of jurisprudence of Islam, which is one of the three main Shi’a interpretations of Islam. Fatemi Imams are descendants of the Prophet MohammedSAW. We believe in the Oneness of God, the Prophet Mohammed al-Mustafa as the final messenger of Allah, and the holy Qur’an as the final message to mankind.
We are led by a leader, or Dai-al-Mutlaq, who is the vicegerent presenting the Imam in seclusion.
Our current and 53rd leader is Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin. His Holiness lives in India, and acts as guide, mentor and the final interpreter of religion while embracing the changing world we live in. Like his predecessors, he regularly reminds us of the role that each of us must play to be a model citizen of the country in which we live, and how we must always be loyal and law-abiding.
American Bohras observe all important dates in the Muslim calendar, like Ramadan (a month of reflection and prayer, marked by meals with friends and relatives, and the exchange of gifts) and Eid (often a time when Muslims open their doors to neighbors of all religions, an occasion to celebrate all faiths and humanity).
