I learned from years of practice that while psychiatric illness can be quite stressful to the patient and their family, it often can be successfully controlled and in many cases recovery is achievable. Some of the ingredients for a good outcome are developing a warm and respectful relationship with my patients, soliciting their ideas, encouraging their active participation, giving them all the information needed, and always reminding them of the many reasons for hope. The recovery journey not infrequently uncovers hidden strengths and may even contribute to personal growth. Itโs my privilege to be part of this journey for the patients who entrust me with caring for them.
I graduated from medical school in 1994 and joined Kaiser Permanente in 2010.
